New Wines from Domaine Guilberteau

I don't know about you, but I've been on a serious Loire kick lately; with the latest Theirry Germain newseltter going absolutely bonkers; I can't stop my true life's calling.   And just when things couldn't get any better: the new releases from one of the true greats is here: Domaine Guilberteau.  The man and the legend soon to be.  In fact, here's a prediction: in the next few years, producers like Guilberteau and Germain will start to enter the conversation with the great Burgundy collectors.  Here are a few accolades to get the show running:

2021 Guiberteau Saumur Blanc

Variety: Chenin Blanc
Vine Age: Planted from the 1940s to 2012
Terroir: Clay, limestone soil from lower on hill in Brézé (older vines) and Clos des Carmes and Clos Guichaux (younger vines)
Viticulture: Organic. Pruning method is Guyau Val de Loire. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted in the vineyard.
Vinification: Whole-cluster pressing, indigenous yeast fermentation, no chaptalization. Aged on fine lees in stainless steel tank until the spring, light filtration.


2020 Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Les Moulins

Vine Age: Planted and replaced from 1935 to 2008
Terroir: Located in the communes of Montreuil-Bellay, Brézé, and Bizay, clay and limestone soil

Vinification: Gentle whole-cluster pressing, no chaptalization, indigenous yeast fermentation. Aged for 9 months in older oak barrels (2 to 4 years).

2018 Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Clos des Charmes

Only grapes from 1 hectare of the highest quality vines go into this cuvée, while the remainder is declassified. In the vineyard, massal selection is used for replacing vines which are planted at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare, with an average yield of 30 hL per hectare.

Terroir: Clay and silt soils, facing south
