2013 Oddero Barolo Plus Older Vintages

"Fans of the traditional style of Barolo should take note."
-- Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

"One of the oldest established Barolo houses and the most important landowner of Barolo’s greatest crus."
-- The Piedmont Guy

Every time I listen to the band King Crimson, I wonder out loud, why aren't these guys more popular? Same can be said for the movie Idiocracy, the reporter Glenn Greenwald and the arm wrestler Devon Larratt: why are they not more popular?

The same can be said about this week's producer: Poderi Oddero. I am really at a loss as to how this Barolo is not sought after like Hamilton tickets. It has everything: perfect traditional flavors, not crazy prices and ageability to last through the zombie apocalypse. Crazy stuff.

I have been giving warnings like this years about various producers from Domaine Fourrier, Bernard Levet and Fratelli Brovia. I was told I was crazy, ludicrous for speaking in such marvelous accolades. But the years have proven me right and they will with the featured wine today.

Below are the main Barolo and crus within the esteemed 2013 vintage. We have also been offered some back vintages that I have listed below.

  • All wines will be arriving mid April!
  • 10% off 6, 15% off 12. For larger sizes, 10% off 3, 15% off 6.

Soft and pretty 2013 with dried berry, cedar, tar and dried flower character. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a savory finish. Really pretty now but better in two years.

2013 Oddero Barolo Brunate
Sale: $116.99
Wine Enthusiast 93 Points:
This opens with alluring red berry, menthol, new leather, star anise and crushed herb scents. It's elegantly structured, offering sour cherry, cranberry, licorice and sage flavors set against firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. A hint of orange zest closes the finish. Drink 2023–2033.

2013 Oddero Barolo Villero
Sale: $69.99
International Wine Report 94 Points:
The 2013 Villero Barolo is another simply fantastic showing from Oddero in the vintage. Beautiful fresh aromas of red fruits, florals, eucalyptus, minerals and leather all burst from the glass. Balanced, focused and precise, this continues to impress with its gorgeous, refined silky texture, which leads into a burst of red fruits and spices on the finish. Overall, this is a simply wonderful Barolo that should evolve gracefully over the next decade and beyond. (Best 2018-2030) - August, 2017 (JD)

2013 Oddero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione
Sale: (1500ml:) $184.99, (3 Liter:) $432.99
International Wine Report 96 Points:
The 2013 Rocche di Castiglione is an utterly fascinating Barolo from Oddero in this vintage. Elegant and refined, this gorgeous Barolo opens to pretty aromatics of strawberries and red cherries followed by mint, leather and lovely floral undertones all taking shape. Precise and well defined, this continues to impress on the palate as it displays remarkable overall depth, balance and finesse. The purity is striking, as it delivers beautiful red fruits through the juicy, ultra-long finish. An incredible showing and certainly one of the most compelling wines from the vintage. (Best 2019-2032)

2011 Oddero Barolo Bussia Mondoca Riserva
Sale: $104.99
Wine Spectator 93 Points:

Settling into a nice rhythm, this red offers fading cherry, berry, floral and spice flavors, with flashes of leather, earth and tobacco. Complex and balanced, with a lively, well-integrated structure and a long, resonant finish. Best from 2020 through 2033. 300 cases made

2009 Oddero Barolo Bussia Mondoca Riserva
Sale: $107.99
Wine Spectator 91 Points:
Sweet cherry and strawberry fruit offsets the tar and tobacco notes in this generous Barolo. Tends toward the woodsy side, showing wild herb notes on the dense, balanced finish. Best from 2017 through 2028

2007 Oddero Barolo Bussia Mondoca Riserva
Sale: $107.99
Wine Spectator 93 Points:
A perfumed red, with licorice, rose, menthol and underbrush aromas leading to leather and tar. The fruit has faded to dried cherry, and there's sweetness to balance the dusty tannins on the finish. Fine length. Best from 2016 through 2032. 200 cases made

2004 Oddero Barolo Bussia Mondoca Riserva
Sale: (3 Liter) $599.99
Wine Spectator 93 Points

2012 Oddero Barolo Brunate
Sale: $109.99
Wine Spectator 92 Points:

Enticing aromas of cherry, rose and spice lead off, while the flavors pick up tar and tobacco, echoing the spice. This is rich and balanced, with oak tannins adding another layer on the long sweet-fruit finish. Best from 2018 through 2032.

2009 Oddero Barolo Brunate
Sale: $109.99
Wine Spectator 92 Points:
Licorice, eucalyptus and underbrush flavors trump the sweet flavors in this sinewy red. With air, floral, cherry, black tea and pepper notes emerge. Beefy tannins guard the finish and the lasting impression is one of freshness. Best from 2017 through 2027

2006 Oddero Barolo Brunate
Sale: (1500ml:) $284.99, (3 Liter:) $719.99
James Suckling 94 Points:

What a nose here. Aromas of dried fruits, porcini mushroom and flowers. Full body, with round and velvety tannins and a chewy finish. A little mouth-puckering from the tannins now but there's a beauty and complexity to this wine

2008 Oddero Barolo Brunate
Sale: $119.99
Wine Spectator 93 Points:

A lean, athletic red, with cherry, menthol, tobacco and tar flavors stretched tautly across a firm frame. Very compact on the finish, the flavors releasing only after about 30 seconds. Be patient for this traditional style. Best from 2017 through 2035

2007 Oddero Barolo Riserva Vignarionda
Sale: $158.99, (1500ml:) $374.99, (3 Liter:) $749.99
Wine Spectator 95 Points:
I'd like to say after 10 years, this is ready to enjoy, however, despite its sweet cherry fruit, leather, woodsy and mineral flavors, there are still dense tannins. It's moving in the right direction, mellowing gracefully and lingering with a long, fresh, tobacco- and mineral-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2020 through 2034

2004 Oddero Barolo Riserva Vignarionda
Sale: (3 Liter:) $749.99
