2018 Patrick Piuze Chablis: The Hits Keep on Coming!

Enter Patrick Piuze. At Some Good Wine we have been huge fans and are one of the top sellers of his wines up and down. The 2018s are a fascinating mix. Overall, they are round and wholesome with the always evolving terroir distinctions. Razor sharp but flirty with their acid and avoiding the mistake of killing the fruit and juicy roundness that when done right, should all come together and make the dimples move into the eyes with carelessness. Good Chablis has a mind of its own and can easily exist as a Chardonnay of exquisite being and uniqueness like the boys down south and when you see the QPR (quality price ratio) there is no reason not to be a Chabliever. (cross between Chablis and believer which I coined a year ago and will use it until something terrible happens to Justin Bieber that makes it no longer funny or relevant.)

2016 Jerome Chezeaux: A Bang for your Buck in the Cotes de Nuits!

The first thing one should know about this incredible winery is that it comes from the distributor Neal Rosenthal. That alone is a selling point, strong enough to encourage anyone. Secondly, check out the prices and the real estate. With 2016 being a monumental vintage, the prices are reflective. Yet here we have incredible wines that are still "reasonable––" a relative term for sure!

2017 Claus Preisinger Zweigelt and Blaufrankish

One of the more fascinating phenomena to happen in the last couple of years, is the emergence of Austrian reds onto the American wine scene. When I first got into this lovely business, there were perhaps a handful in some of the better stores. However, they were hardly appreciated and far from serious players. Yet the emergence makes sense. The Austrian red grapes of Zweigelt, Blaufrankish and St. Laurent tend to have what people are looking for. Overall on the lighter side with some similar characteristics that one might see in the ever popular Pinot Noir. I always love to susbstitute one of these for a customer and throw some caution to the wind.

2017 Panther Creek Pinot Noir @ Lowest Price Ever!!!!!

Quality Pinot below $20 is absurd these days. Even more absurd than a wine bottle named after an exotic animal without a photo of the exotic animal. But for today, we have managed to pull both off.  Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Panther Creek Cellars has been producing signature Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wines since 1986. The winery has been recognized for its signature blends as well as single vineyard designate wines.

Northern Rhone Whites from Xavier Gerard

Most are familiar with this estate from a few weeks back when we had a great deal on the Cote Rotie. For this week, I wanted to feature the new line up of whites. I feel that Northern Rhone whites in general are somewhat misunderstood. Well, maybe that's not even the right term. Simply, people should be exploring these more.

New and Old Wines from Radikon

If you're unfamiliar with these wines, let's start here:  Raise your hand if you've heard of this new term "orange wine?"  Me, me, me. Yes, we have tons of them. What is it? In simple terms, wine that is orange or white wine with extended skin contact.  Read here if you'd like to learn more. I was into this thing before it became a thing, but at Some Good Wine, we're trying not to make it a thing. Get it? No, okay. Well, Radikon is one of the leaders of orange wine making; iconic in a sense and one of the inspirational leaders for those around the world trying to make it in this space. The trick though, is not to think of it as orange wine and more of just Radikon's wine.

2017 Drew Pinot Noir Fog Eater with Big Scores

Sorry for the back to back newsletters this week; breaking my two a week and possibly getting some unsubscribes, but something nice happened: One of my favorite American Pinot Noirs has just gotten a rad score and I grabbed up a lot of it.

New Wines from Alain Voge: Another Northern Rhone Super Star!

The red and white wines of the Northern Rhone never cease to amaze me. Majestic, tantalizing and transcendental are a few adjectives that come to mind but what really gets me excited is the QPR (quality price ratio.) For wines that are seemingly popular and in an area with expensive real estate, in my humble opinion there is no greater value in the world. Even the most basic northern Rhone wines can age and age with the better ones lasting decades. When a customer wants a case of wine for $50/bottle to last several decades for their children, Northern Rhone Syrah is the first to come to mind.
