South Park makes it's season premier tonight. That is the best news I've heard in a a while. Until now.....

Yves Cuilleron has a new set of wines. Unfamiliar? Take a stroll sometime into our Northern Rhone section. Notice the array of blue and green colors on the bottom shelf. Notice the names of wines you have never heard of before This is Yves Cuilleron country. A former car mechanic who turned in his overpriced estimates for the steep hills of the Northern Rhone. These are really interesting wines at all prices. 

Cuilleron thinks outside the box and really strives to produce wine from every single area of the northern Rhone. He just loves the northern Rhone that much. Who doesn't? It is a scary place. Even scarier when the names of the wines are unheard of even for wine savvy people. As you will see, these are fascinating parcels he has come up with that should make for interesting exploration of an area still very off the beaten path.

2014 Yves Cuilleron Syrah"Les Vignes d'a Cote:"    $17.99
From various areas of Chavanay in the heart of the northern Rhone. Spicy and bright with an unbelievable sense of purity and restrain. Real sense of character and precision.

2014 Yves Cuilleron Syrah "Les Candives:"  $23.99
From the best parcels in Chavanay just above Condrieu. Darker and rich than the above with equal sense of time and place.

2014 Yves Cuilleron Saint Peray "Les Potiers:"  $29.99
55-50, Marsanne, Rousanne from young vines vilified in old barrels stemming from a 1 hectare parcel. One of those awesome in-between wines. Exotic flowers and orange blossom dominate the nose with enough acid and mineral elements to assuage the Sancerre lovers in all of us.

2014 Yves Cuilleron Saint Peray "Les Cerfs:"  $34.99
100% Marsanne from 30 year old vines. Richer and fuller than the above; spending 9 months in barrel there is more almond essence on the nose with a wonderful symbiotic sense of richness and finesse. 

2013 Yves Cuilleron Crozes Hermitage "Laya:"   $28.99
2nd vintage of this wine. 20 year old vines and done in old, neutral barrels. Standard Crozes notes of earth, funk, tar and jam. Restrained tannins don't take you to the dark side. 

2013 Yves Cuilleron Saint Joseph "Pierre Seches:" $29.99
Classic Saint Joseph that spends 18 months in barrel. Fruit forward with solid red and black fruit; quaint tar and licorice scents. Fine balance of power and finesse.

2013 Yves Cuilleron Saint Joseph "Serines:"   $54.99 
From the rare "Serine" clone of Syrah, with vine age averaging 70 years. Extremely concentrated, dark and complete. Will age a good 20 years plus and still show up early to thanksgiving. 

2014 Yves Cuilleron Condrieu "La Petite Cote:"  $56.99
100% Viognier with classic notes of apricot, peach and flowers. What may seem somewhat timid on the nose becomes full and exuberant on the palate with lots of swirl, bite and lingering. 

2013 Yves Cuilleron Condrieu "Vertige:" $99.99

From extreme mineral rich granite soil areas. Fine combination of grace and powerful with long candied oranges and apricots. Salinity really shows but is the driver not the forcer.  

2010 Yves Cuilleron Cote Rotie Bassenon: $69.99

The first of the Cote Roties of the domaine is sourced from a 1.5 hectare parcel on the hill of Semons in the vaillage of Tupin-Semons in the southern sector of the appellation.  The soil is granite and gneiss; the blend is 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier.  The cuvaison proceeds for three weeks; the wine is racked into small barrel for the malolactic; then, there is an elevage of eighteen months before the wine is bottled unfiltered. Round, supple and fruit forward. 
2010 Yves Cuilleron Cote Rotie Madiniere: $69.99

This cuvée is sourced from a two hectare parcel with a south-southeast exposure in the northern tier of the village of Ampuis.  The soil is composed of schist.  This Cote Rotie is 100% Syrah.  There is a three week cuvaison, regular pigeage and remontage; then, the wine is racked into small barrel for the elevage where the malolactic occurs.  The wine is bottled without filtration eighteen months after harvest. More classic game notes than the Bassenon 
2010 Yves Cuilleron Cote Rotie Terres Sombres: $89.99
3 Bottles Per Person
The “Terres Sombres” is the most full-bodied and “sauvage” of the trio of Cote Roties produced by Cuilleron.  The vines are planted in a 1.8 hectare parcel in Ampuis on terraces with a south-southeast exposure.  Again, this wine is 100% Syrah.  The grapes are partially destemmed; there is a three week cuvaison; the wine is racked into small barrel for the malolactic; the wine is bottled unfiltered after eighteen months of elevage.
