2017 JJ Prum & Back Vintages

JJ Prum. You know them. One of the most iconic wine producers out there. A name so archetypal it says everything about German Riesling that one can conjure. The soil. The life. The experience. Luckily for us, the prices in 2017 are not insane. Especially for wines which will age decades and decades.  And do you know that great website where you go to compare prices? 2017 Prum Vintage Summary:
2017 Cool January followed by a mild February and March triggered an early start of the vegetation with bud break in early April. Late April and early May frosts put the breaks on the 2017 vintage. Mid-May brought a decisive change in the weather with summer-like temperatures reaching 85°F. The vegetation roared, and flowering started and completed without coulure. Heavy rains in early June with temperatures reaching the mid P90°’s followed by a dry period for the rest of June and July. Early July it was cooled by the end of the month temperatures had fallen to the high 60°’s. Lots of rain throughout July with tome hail that resulted in little damage. The weather continued to remain unstable through September which was cooler, but also more humid. It finally stabilized by the end of September and early October. A very early harvest started September 25th that finished in less than a month on October 18th. A sunny, dry and golden October provided near ideal conditions for the harvest. The vintage was generous for its quality, but disappointing for its quantity. The vintage brought Kabinetts, with focus on Spätlese and Auslese and with the help of a good amount of “good” botrytis also noble sweets including TBA. Wines with dry extract and acids promising very vibrant Rieslings with great aging potential.
