Chablis Time....Plus Back Vintages of Chateau de Pibarnon Bandol

I have been meaning to write about Chablis for a while now. It is one of our store's favorites plus one of the most under appreciated wine regions on the planet. So what better time to get the ball rolling. Consider this one of the first newsletters in a long string of things for Chablis.

Forgive me if you already know this, but Chablis is Chardonnay. Chablis is different than other types of Chardonnay due to the fact that it is normally un-oaked (except at the Grand cru level) and grown on Kimmeridgean soil of limestone and clay, giving the wine a distinct minerality that I might describe and prolific and protruding. In fact, in a blind tasting, one would probably describe Chablis as being closer to Sancerre (similar soil) than another Chardonnay. from Burgundy or the new world.

Chablis is distinct
Chablis is awesome
You should be drinking more of it.

For today, I am going to feature one producer I have come to know and love over the years. Jean Dauvissat does great stuff. He tends to release his wines a little bit later than others, so as you will see, the grand crus will have at least 6 years of age, while some of the premier crus at least 3. There is debate in Chablis as to whether or not these are wines that can be aged. As you will soon see, the answer is yes!

2010 Jean Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Sechets: $34.99
Known as a premier cru site with well drained, limestone soils normally the most elegant of the premier crus in this area. In the 2010, we have an example loaded with white flowers and acacia up the whazoo; puckered by precise minerals and clean, zippy notes.

2010 Jean Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Montmains: $39.99
Nose of stones and mint. Seems it would be mineral driven but there is good succulentness here with a powerful acidity. Bit of the old, mineral/fruit dichotomy here.

2007 Jean Dauvissat Chablis Vaillons VV 1er cru: $44.99
Lovely ocean and shell aromas with a hint of the exotic. This has a little age showing -- in a good way, calm down! No pre-ox. There is some lovely earth character creeping up the spine. Should last for a few more years.

2007 Jean Dauvissat Preusses Grand Cru: $77.99
Preuses wrapped up in a package and ready to sell. Preuses has it should be: the good, the bad, the ugly (rarely). Powerful yet ethereal, exotic yet engaging, succulent and to the point.

Speaking of awesome and unknown, very few red wines for the price can age as well as Bandol. Chateau de Pibarnon is one with tremendous potential and a producer I have offered before with much success. Below are a few back vintages and newer ones soon to be released.
