2015 Chateau Haut Segottes Saint Emillion Grand CruRosenthal
Some of you might know a wine called "Cheval Blanc." If you don't know it, do you remember in the movie Sideways where after Paul Giamatti finds out his exwife is pregnant, he ditches the wedding and grabs a special wine to eat over burgers and fries? That's Cheval Blanc. Haut Segottes is not that, but....it does border it and happens to be the only other Saint Emillion that is a majority Cab Franc. Harvest is manual. Fermentation takes place in cuve. Wines are rotated into barrel for an “elevage” of approximately 18 months. Approximately 20% of the barrels are new. Wines are bottled unfiltered. This dominance of Cabernet Franc (frequently on the order of 65%) produces a wine of considerable structure and is exceptionally age-worthy. There is a purity here with extreme finesse and dusty tannic structure that gets my juices flowing time and time again with this wine.
